Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week 2013
Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week 2013 covers 9 days of sailing and celebrating from 9th – 18th August.
A variety of shore side events will take place all over the town including crafts, music, food, dance, stalls and of course the ever popular Red Arrows fly-by. All these events support some of the most captivating and beautiful sailing out in Falmouth Bay and up Carrick Roads.
Armed with a picnic, hats, suncream, binoculars and cameras you could easily while away hours enjoying the fine weather, gentle sea breeze and view from Pendennis Point or base yourself across the water and watch from St Mawes Headland. Get the kids to pack plenty of imagination as, ‘Little Dennis’, is the perfect place for allowing it to run away with them.
The Bay Fleet – 10 – 17th August
Divided into two fleets a mix of regatta and obstacle races will take place over seven days on the expanses of Falmouth Bay. The fleets include PY Yachts, PY Cruising Yachts, IRC, Mocra, marie holm and Firebirds.
All Bay Fleet vessels go on to take part in the traditional long Champagne Day Race on the 15th. The race and prize giving celebrate the historic race of 1951 when two very competitive friends Lord Showcross and Jack Siley decided to hold their own race by breaking away from the rest of the regatta fleet. The outcome saw the loser being presented, by the winner, with champagne.
The Champagne Day course will cover Falmouth Bay, Carrick Road and Falmouth
Harbour entrance and possibly, subject to wind and weather, Helford River and Gerrans
Bay.
In good timing the prize giving takes place at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club at 6pm so non-competitors and visitors can join us and watch the Red Arrows. At 6.15pm eyes turn to the skies across Falmouth harbour and scan for the anticipated arrival of our favourite aviation acrobats. Good vantage points are the National Maritime Museum, Events Square, Gas Works Car-park, (in the centre of town), and North Parade near the Greenbank Hotel.
The Carrick Fleet – 10th – 15th
As the fleet title suggests the regatta takes place on the Carrick Roads, and it’s close proximity to the headland offers some wonderful photo opportunities.
The waters edge at Pendennis Headland is the perfect place to enjoy the water.
Twelve classes including Flying Fifteens, Dragons, International One Designs, Shrimpers, Large and Small Working Boats, St Mawes one Designs & Sunbeams will enjoy one race per day. If wind direction is good expect to see the Ajax class out in the bay for two races on the 13th and 15th. The warning signal for the first class to start will be at 12.55pm on the day.
The Dinghy Week Fleet – 11th – 16th August
Taking place in the Carrick Roads and, if weather/wind permits, a course will also be created in the harbour. Two Races a day are scheduled with the warning signal to start at 10.30am.
The IRC Mini Series – 11th – 13th August
Sailed over the first three days the IRC will race the, ‘Windward-Leeward’, course three races per day out in Falmouth Bay. The race start warning signal will be sounded at 10.55am each day.
More great vantage points are Castle Beach, Gyllngvase Beach and Boscowan Fields.
