Ghost Hunting at Heartlands Cornwall
With such a diverse and long history of invasions, piracy, tragedy and murder Cornwall has long been the destination for ghost hunters. Whether you perceive it as the last or first county of England it is most certainly the first on your paranormal destination map. So in the run up to Halloween Visit Falmouth are off in search of, ‘Knockers’, at the newly developed Heartlands Mining & Heritage site in Pool, Redruth.
With nearly 400 years of mining history this site has had its fair share of ups and downs among its mining community. There is little doubt that the, ‘Robinsons Shaft’, site will be home to several, ‘Knockers’, and spirits of old miners.
The life and work of, ‘Tinners’, is documented as being full of traditions and tales instigated by, ‘Knockers’, ‘Buccas’ and, ‘Spriggins’, the little people that inhabit the dark tunnels of mines and wells. The souls of those too good for hell and not good enough for heaven were reported to have warned the Tinners’ of danger and led them to areas of great load in return for respect, gifts of food or a share in the Tinners’ load.
One morning Heartlands Marketing Manager Kate and a colleague arrived particularly early to organise a busy day. On entering the office kate was overcome with a strange uneasy feeling that she could not explain. She turned to her colleague who was drained of all colour and both decided that they had experienced something worth investigating. Kate contacted local paranormal team, ‘G.H.O.S.T’, to see if there really is any paranormal activity on the site. The Result of the investigation is a recording of several clear Cornish voices and activity in various areas of the building. One voice saying, ‘Bobbin’ Big Head’, may possibly be making reference to the, ‘Balance Bob’, a counterweight used in pumping water out and up the shafts. Could the voice saying, ‘Ghost is in there’, recorded in the visitor center be that of a helpful spirit?
One thing is certain I will be following the tradition of the Tinners’ and taking along some treats of food to offer the, ‘Knockers’, just in case.
