Fal River Festival 1 – 10th June 2012
The seventh Fal River Festival starts today. A spectacular ten days packed full with events and celebrations that are guaranteed to offer something for all our visitors to enjoy. The not –for -profit festival is one other way for all our visitors to experience the talent and amazing skills of the local community. There will be music, dance, art, drama, swimming and gig racing to name but only a few events that are aimed at celebrating the Fal rivers history and heritage. Organised by Truro and Penwith College events are staged at various points along and on the river with Falmouth offering centre stage. Today June 1st
The festival kicks off today with the ‘Beer Fleet’. A flotilla of tugs from A&P group (sponsors of the event) will be joined by various craft as the fleet set sails from the King Harry check point and along the river landing at custom house quay. Anyone with a vessel is encouraged to join the fleet and enjoy the atmosphere. The fleet will leave at around 4.30pm from the King Harry Ferry and enters Falmouth harbour at an estimated 5.30pm where the spectacular opening of the tugs water canons’ will be a perfect photographic opportunity for all our visitors.
Didn’t pack your sea legs? No problem. At 6pm head to the Events Square where the opening speeches will take place and then it’s time to P.A.R.T.Y! Music to support dancing feet and hands will be brought to you by Truro & Penwith College very own jazz band, Degree. After warming up your jazz hands and feet there is something for the soul as Soul Sensation carry you into the night from 8pm. The very famous Skinners brewery will be keeping your thirst at bay and you may even get a twirl with Skinners very own Betty Stogs.
Other events taking place today
Can’t wait until the official opening ceremony? In that case head to Gyllyngdune Gardens and celebrate unusual doorways with Shallal. The community dance company will be blending dance, music and art during their ‘Cornish Doorways Project’. Performances are twenty minutes long and start at 12pm with two further performances at 2pm and 4pm. The performances are free and no booking is needed so just turn up and enjoy. Today also sees the start of Open Studios that enables visitors to get a closer look at the work of Cornish based artists in their studios. There are an estimated 209 artists taking part this year throughout Cornwall so were ever your exploration takes you be on the look-out for studios marked with an orange ‘O’. If this isn’t enough to get you started and you fancy a satirical look into political life then, Mac Dunlop’s ‘If Not. Then What?’ exhibition opens at Jam Records on Falmouth’s high street today.
