Reasons to Visit Falmouth
We know you all probably already have lots of great reasons to Visit Falmouth but just in case you want one or two more then here we go.
Falmouth Festivals & Events, with so many throughout the year it often feels like one big carnival. This constant flow of entertainment and celebration means that whenever you Visit Falmouth there will always be something to do. From sailing regatta’s including the, Pendennis Cup, Falmouth Week and Tall Ships. Just three events that see our beautiful bay decorated in Classic Yachts, Super Yachts and in 2014 the most breath-taking and spectacular of them all the Tall Ships. But, look behind all this and see the other side of Falmouth, the busy working side of Falmouth. Tuggs, lifeboats, coastguards and ferries are always out there on the water busy going about their daily routines and working tirelessly to make these events possible and safe. If you get chance take ten minutes to watch our tugs, their skippers are among some of the best sailor’s on the water today. Watching the skill and tight turns these little powerhouses need to manoeuvre craft ten times their own size is truly captivating and will often have you watching through your fingers!
There are festivities to celebrate the towns wealth of creativity, heritage and of course miles of coastline and spectacular gardens. The town has a long history of creativity that can always be researched through our Art Gallery and one of the towns oldest buildings the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic and of course we are lucky to be home to many talented Falmouth University students. If you arrive during Splash Festival, (20 – 28th Sept), you will be treated to award winning drama, poetry, literature, music and dance from local and international artists, authors, poets, actors, dancers and musicians.
Our spring festival gives you the chance to look closely at our coastline through rock-pooling days, guided walks and trips on and off the water. Along with these days there are always experienced wildlife exploration teams ready to take you on fascinating and informative day trips. Dolphins, basking sharks, seals and a whole host of beautiful sea birds live alongside us here in Falmouth.
There are festivals to celebrate the towns history as one of the leading ports for communication during the days of the Packet Ships, a port ready for battle as forces joined together in preparation for D-Day and of course the pirate tales are never far away, Falmouth was even once home to one of the most fearless and famous lady pirates too! Beer is also covered in our busy event calendar after all who didn’t sing a shanty, set sail or raid a ship without a tankard of grog or two?
If you aren’t looking for festivals and you just want to soak up the Sun and yes we wont lie even the rain occasionally, you can amble along the sea-front and watch life on the beaches and water or you can enjoy our many attractions from the award winning National Maritime Museum to the historic Pendennis Castle.
